About Us

Who we are: We express our faith in reaching out to people of need in our own fellowship, our community, and our world. We have adopted the motto:
Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors to show our commitment to helping others, our willingness to witness to our faith and to hear the witness of those whose experience has been different, and to welcome into our fellowship all who earnestly and sincerely wish to lead a more full life.

History: Tabor Heights was founded by three Portland Evangelical United Brethren congregations in the 1960’s which became United Methodist when the two denominations joined in 1968. The version of the Lord’s Prayer we use (forgive us our debts . . . ) comes from that EUB heritage.

Tabor Heights commitment to transformation is evident in the caring life of the congregation and captured in the beautiful architecture of the building: the lovely vista of the Portland skyline from the Fellowship Hall and the inspiring sanctuary especially the warm natural wood paneling and stained glass windows When sitting in the sanctuary, Jesus’ transfiguration is portrayed in the windows on the right, and human transfiguration is portrayed on the left. These windows are portrayed at the left side of this page. A larger image is available by clicking here.

The windows at the Stark Street entrance portray Jesus’ promise: I am the light of the world, whomever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. John 8: 12

The windows at the 62nd Avenue entrance portray Jesus’ command: Go and make disciples of all nations; baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teach them to observe all that / have commanded you; for lo, I am with you always. Matthew 28: 19-20

We are one in Christ. We welcome all persons from any or no faith backgrounds, who seek to grow in love with God and embrace our mission to live as Christ’s body in the world today.
